You’re not the only one hurt by your emotional eating.

I’M NOT HURTING anyone by overeating. Eighteen years ago, I truly believed these words. Today, I know differently.

When I weighed over 300 pounds, I was so desperately miserable that I didn’t know what my loved ones were experiencing. Both of my parents worried about my health. My sister was teased viciously for having a fat sibling. And those few people who did spend time with me were ostracized for doing so.

Every day the people in my life were forced to deal with my sadness, depression, and anger. And though I tried not to, I regularly took my frustration out on those around me. In short, I was miserable to be around yet I didn’t know it.

Is it possible that this is happening in your life? For the past forty-five days you have learned a lot about yourself and your eating habits. Up until this point, the focus has been on you. Today, it’s time to think about the other people in your life.

Has anyone ever told you that they are worried about your over- or undereating? Have you ever pushed someone away so that you could be alone to eat? Has your anger with yourself spilled over into other areas of your life or been used as a weapon to keep people away? Or, have you given up and pulled away from everyone?

These are only a few of the ways that your eating patterns can affect others. You probably have your own habits outside of those mentioned above. Think about all areas of your life. Do you stifle your career so that you have more time to be with food? Is your living space all that you want it to be or do you simply ignore it so you have time to eat? Are your spending habits out of control because you’re buying so much food?

Today, take some time to write about the ways that your eating impacts other people in your life. Don’t use this list to beat yourself up. Instead, use this list to motivate you to make things better. You deserve to have a full and healthy life, not just for yourself but for your loved ones as well.
